Minnesota Soybean “Clean Air Choice” Scholarship - Open to all high school seniors with plans for a postsecondary education. Write a 1,000 word essay on biodiesel. Choose from the topics: 1. How biodiesel benefits Minnesota 2. Expanding biodiesel use: opportunities & challenges 3. Biodiesel in my town: how can you impact biodiesel use in your area? Or create your own topic on biodiesel. Entries must RECEIVED by 4:30 p.m. on April 30, 2010. See Mrs. Strandberg for further details.
Ray & Joan Grefe Scholarship fund – A $5,000 per
year, renewable scholarship for a full-time student in mathematics
or natural science. Applicants must have 3 years of math or natural
science in high school. Scholarships will be made on the basis of
need, character and academic ability. To apply, submit a
transcript, ACT score, two recommendations (one from a math or
science teacher) a copy of your parent’s tax return, and a copy of
your senior year class schedule. The application form is available
from Mrs. Strandberg in Room 204.
Hy-Vee Foundation Scholarship Program - $1,000 dollar
scholarship. Must be an employee of Hy-Vee OR the son/daughter of a
Hy-Vee employee. To apply, you must submit an application, a copy
of your transcript, your ACT score, a summary of activities &
accomplishments, and a personal written statement on why you should
be considered for this scholarship. Please see Mrs. Strandberg for
an application.
ACT Test Date – the next ACT test date is April 10, 2010.
Registration is due no later than March 5, 2010.
CAREER CORNER
Phlebotomy
Technician – This is a one-semester certificate of 20
credits. The Phlebotomy program gives students the training for
employment in a clinical laboratory. A phlebotomist is responsible
for collecting blood specimens from patients for the purpose of
laboratory analysis. After completion of classroom training, the
student is assigned to a clinic for 5 credits of clinical
experience.
Paralegal – The
paralegal occupation will have faster than average growth in the
coming years. Paralegal AAS program students take 72 credits. They
will study civil litigation, criminal procedures, family law,
business organizations, real estate, probate & estates,
bankruptcy and property laws. They also receive training in the
preparation and handling of legal documents, legal research, legal
writing, legal ethics, trial preparation, investigation, and skills
to be successful in the business world. A knowledge of computer
applications is required.

Preparation Day – February 21, 2010 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at
Minnesota West Community and Technical College Room 604
This event is for individuals who need help filling out
the FAFSA, filling out scholarship applications, or searching for
careers and colleges.
For filling out the FAFSA (Federal Application for Student Aid),
please bring students AND parents 2009 tax returns, bank account
information, SS#’s, drivers’ license numbers, records of untaxed
income, and if not a U.S. citizen an alien registration
number.
