Round Lake-Brewster Schools Press Release

The Interdistrict Cooperative Paired School Districts of Round Lake/Brewster have been planning for some type of school reorganization for the past two and one half years.  This process began in the fall of 2010 when the school boards held public “listening sessions” with parents and students to determine what the expectations were for our schools.  During the intervening time, the school boards and public officials have been busy gathering enrollment and financial data for the two schools.  This past fall, the Round Lake and Brewster School Districts first gave each other notice of their intent to consolidate with each other.  Then the boards took appropriate action to notify Nobles County, the Minnesota Department of Education, and the Secretary of State Office of their intention to consolidate the two schools districts and also to submit a plan for the orderly reduction of the number of school board members of the proposed school district from twelve school board members down to six board members.

At a Special Joint School Board meeting held at the Round Lake/Brewster Elementary School Library held on Monday, February 4, 2013, information was presented to the Joint Boards regarding projected enrollment through the end of the 2017-2018 school year along with the financial projections which are driven by enrollment.  These projections show that by the end of the 2014-2015 school year both school districts would be in an untenable financial position.  Presenting unfavorable financial information regarding the future of the consolidated school district would result in a negative reaction from MDE and would result in the prohibition of further consolidation efforts and ultimately would lead to the elimination of the Round Lake and Brewster School District.

The option that is financially viable and educationally sound is to close the high school, operate a Pre K-5 Elementary School and a Grades 6-8 Middle School in the present elementary school facility.  This plan would necessitate the students of Round Lake and Brewster in grades 9-12 attend neighboring high schools on a tuition basis.  All of this is in the preliminary planning stages.  A favorable vote in each school district to support consolidation would be imperative before final action could be taken for a school closure or tuition agreement being implemented.   It also should be clearly understood that all of this is subject to public hearings, full disclosure by the school boards and school officials, as well as full “review and comment” and permission by the Minnesota Department of Education before any school closure, tuition agreements, or consolidation can occur and consolidation also requires the full support and passage of the consolidation question by public vote.

In this difficult time, we would hope that our communities and parents will continue to support our schools.  There is a strong value in smaller school public education.  During this process, we will continue to strive to provide the best quality education for our students, which are shown by our schools ability to make adequate yearly progress, which is based upon 2012 test scores.  If any questions, please contact school administration at 507-842-5951.  Thank you for your time and support of our schools.
